A man died in after a single-vehicle crash in the Harbeson area last night in which police believe speeding was a factor.
Following an investigation that closed Lewes-Georgetown Highway between Harbeson Road and Hudson Road, Delaware State Police said that around 9:20 p.m., a 47-year-old man from Milton was driving a 2007 GMC Yukon eastbound on Lewes-Georgetown Highway (Route 9) at a high rate of speed. For a reason police said is still unknown, the driver lost control of his vehicle as he approached a slight curve west of Harbeson Road (Route 5).
The truck crossed the center line of the road into the westbound lane, police said, where it then left the roadway, driving through the front yards of several residential properties.
It came to stop when it hit a utility pole and caught fire. Police said the vehicle was partially engulfed in flames.
The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending next of kin notifications.
This incident, which closed the road for about 2.5 hours, is still being investigated by Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Troopers are asking witnesses to call Corporal M. Kristunas at 302-703-3275.
