Medical helicopter crashes while responding to fatal Butler County crash


One person is dead and several others were taken to the hospital after a vehicle crash that led to a CareFlight helicopter crashing while responding to the scene.The crash occurred around 4:08 a.m. on U.S. 127 at Eaton Road in Milford Township. The intersection was shut down all day so crews could investigate. It reopened around 5 p.m.The Butler County Sheriff’s Office said a Chevrolet Silverado traveling east on Eaton Road when it traveled into the intersection where it was hit by a GMC Sierra traveling north.A 69-year-old female passenger from Richmond, Indiana, who was riding in the Silverado was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene. A 43-year-old passenger was extricated from the truck and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The other two passengers suffered minor injuries and were also taken to the hospital.The driver of the GMC Sierra was the only person in the vehicle and was not injured. A CareFlight helicopter was called in for treatment but while responding, it hit some wires and crashed near the scene. Three crew members inside the aircraft were able to safely exit and were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office said. Premier Health gave an update, saying two of the three crew members had been treated for their injuries and released. A third is still being evaluated.An Oxford firefighter was also injured while responding to the crash, according to the City of Oxford Professional Firefighters.The Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team is processing both crashes and will be working with the Federal Aviation Administration to look into the helicopter crash. The identity of the woman killed is being withheld pending notification of the family.
