A 43-year-old man was killed in a shooting Monday morning in Wilmington’s West Center City neighborhood.
Police later identified the victim as Ronald Wallace.
No additional information was released by city police Monday evening.
This is Wilmington’s sixth homicide so far this year – that’s half as many people killed at this time in Wilmington last year, which ended the year with a record number of killings.
The number of people that Wilmington police have reported being shot so far this year is also down from last year. So far this year, 29 people have been shot in Wilmington. There were 50 people shot last year at this time.
Family and friends of the victim gathered in the 600 block of West St. Monday afternoon in remembrance of the man. A family member of the victim declined to comment.
Many of those paying their respects on Monday stood near where hours earlier officers investigated the man’s shooting, which occurred about 6:40 a.m.
The officers were gone by noon.
So were the items of clothing that had been scattered along the asphalt and chalk circles outlining where bullet casings were found.
About all that remained to show a shooting had occurred was the police crime tape that had been stuffed into a corner trash can.
