A 30-year-old man from Elkton, Maryland, was killed in a bicycle crash in Newark Friday night, according to Delaware State Police.
The cyclist was traveling south on Salem Church Road near Adel Drive in the middle of the lane, state police said. A 20-year-old driver entered the lane behind him and attempted to pass him in the northbound lane at around 10:12 p.m., police reported. At the same time, the cyclist veered to the left, police said, and was struck by the front passenger side of the car.
The crash launched the 30-year-old off of his bike and into the northbound lane, police said. The driver lost control of his car after the collision, according to state police, and he drove into a sign on the side of the road. The car then bounced back onto the street, crossing over both lanes before hitting a tree and coming to a stop, police said.
The cyclist – whose name has not yet been released – was taken to Christiana Hospital, where he later died, according to police. Police said the driver was not injured in the crash.
Salem Church Road between Adel Drive and Old Baltimore Pike was closed for about three hours, police said.
