CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A man has been arrested after he was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run in which the tractor-trailer he was driving hit a school bus and injured the bus driver.
On Wednesday, Feb. 7, deputies with the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle crash on Sparta Road near the intersection of Pendleton Road involving a Caroline County school bus and a tractor-trailer.
When deputies arrived, they found a school bus with “moderate damage” to the driver’s side, and the bus driver with “many lacerations” on her face, according to the sheriff’s office.
Three high school students were riding the bus at the time and were uninjured. One of the students reportedly used his clothing to stop the bleeding on the bus driver’s face.
The tractor-trailer that reportedly hit the school bus did not stop and was not seen by responding deputies.
Caroline County Public School personnel shared video footage from the school bus with deputies, which showed a Peterbilt tractor-trailer cross the center line and hit the driver’s side of the bus. The footage was then used to begin tracking down the tractor-trailer.
On Tuesday, Feb. 13, after receiving tips from the community, investigators found the tractor-trailer in Louisa County. Afterward, investigators obtained a search warrant to conduct a search of the truck and to obtain paint samples for scientific analysis.
Investigators also obtained search warrants to seize and search the cellphone of the tractor-trailer’s owner.
After the search warrants were completed, investigators identified 33-year-old Kelvin Jackson, of Mineral, as the suspected driver of the tractor-trailer at the time of the crash on Sparta Road, according to the sheriff’s office.
On Thursday, Feb. 15, investigators obtained an arrest warrant against Jackson for felony hit and run.
With assistance from the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson was found and taken into custody without incident. He is being held without bond at the Pamunkey Regional Jail.
