Gas prices are coming down, but as of Thursday, AAA said the average in Maine was still $4.79 per gallon. That is forcing many people to make some changes in order to handle the higher costs.In Jay, the Duffy family is now using 4-wheelers to drive to work and run errands around town. “I’m running only a 1-cylinder engine in this versus the four cylinders in my car, so instead of 35 miles a gallon I’ll get over 70 miles a gallon,” said Patrick Duffy.Duffy says many other people are doing the same thing because of the gas prices. He says the change has helped his family save about $100 per month.He says they stick to ATV trails in the area and, weather permitting, his family will continue to use their 4-wheelers.In many Maine communities, ATVs are not allowed to be driven on main roads, so make sure to check your local regulations. The vehicles also need to be registered and there are safety requirements. Check the state laws and regulations, too. You can also find a map of the ATV and snowmobile trails across the state.
