Mail carrier robbed at gunpoint in Richmond, residents asked to stop using USPS mailboxes

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond residents are being asked to avoid putting sensitive documents into United States Postal Service (USPS) mailboxes for the time being after a regional mailbox key was stolen from a mail carrier.

According to a Nextdoor post from Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney Collette McEachin, a mail carrier was robbed at gunpoint on East Franklin Street in Richmond on Thursday, March 29. The carrier was not injured, according to McEachin.

The suspect took the carrier’s arrow key, which is used to open USPS exterior mailboxes, outdoor parcel lockers, cluster box units and apartment panels, according to McEachin.

McEachin is asking Richmond residents to stop using blue USPS mailboxes, especially as important financial documents and checks are being mailed during tax season.

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact Richmond Police Department detective Tori Wilson by email at tori.wilson@rva.gov or by calling 804-646-3602.
