MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WRIC) — The Longwood University Lancers lost to the University of Houston’s Cougars by a painful 40 points Friday night, finishing out the game with a 46-86 final score.
The No. 1 seeded Cougars snagged an impressive win during this first-round NCAA Tournament matchup on Friday, March 22, winning themselves a ticket to the next round while leaving the No. 16 seeded Lancers far behind.
The Lancers didn’t score their first points until nearly five minutes into the first half — unlike the Cougars, who hit the ground running with a 10-point lead. That lead grew to as large as 42 points over the course of the game, according to ESPN.
While the Lancers had a far higher free throw percentage, it wasn’t enough to make up for how few three-pointers the team managed to get into the basket. Additionally, the Cougars played an active game with a strong defense, managing nearly 20 defensive rebounds and earning 25 of their 68 points from turnovers, according to ESPN.
The Cougars will step back onto FedExForum court, this time to face off against the No. 9 seeded Texas A&M Aggies, this Sunday night.
