PHILADELPHIA − Eagles coach Nick Sirianni was mad, fighting mad.
No, it wasn’t because of Jalen Hurts’ performance. Hurts was magnificent, completing all six of his passes for 80 yards and a touchdown in his only series in the Eagles’ preseason opener on Friday night. Hurts had a perfect passer rating of 158.3.
Rather, Sirianni was incensed when Jets linebacker Quincy Williams hit Hurts out of bounds, with his helmet, as Hurts escaped pressure. Williams was immediately flagged for unnecessary roughness as several Eagles teammates quickly came over to the Jets sideline, where the hit took place, to confront Williams.
Sirianni, meanwhile, came on the field and started yelling in the direction of Jets coach Robert Saleh. TV cameras caught Sirianni yelling, “Hey Saleh, what the (expletive)! That’s (expletives)!”
Hurts wasn’t hurt. He had completed a 28-yard pass to Quez Watkins on the first play, followed by a 12-yarder to Miles Sanders and 6 yards to Jack Stoll. The Eagles got to the Jets’ 35 when Hurts escaped the pocket and ran to the sideline where Williams hit him.
The penalty put the Eagles at the Jets’ 20. Hurts then hit Sanders for 9 yards to get down to the 11. After a holding penalty, Hurts capped the drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Goedert.
Hurts did not throw a pass to A.J. Brown in that first series.
Regardless, the Eagles weren’t taking any chances as Hurts and most of the first-team offense were done for the night after that series.
The Jets led 14-3 at halftime.
Jets QB hurt
It wasn’t a good night for Jets quarterback Zach Wilson. He was intercepted on his first series by Kyzir White, setting the Eagles up at the Jets’ 27. The Eagles converted that into a touchdown, too, on Jason Huntley’s 1-yard run on fourth down.
On the next series, Wilson escaped pressure and headed upfield. He was untouched when he went down just across midfield after picking up 8 yards. He was taken into the locker room. The Jets announced that Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in 2021, had suffered a knee injury.
In all, Wilson was 3-for-5 for 23 yards.
