RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A crash on Interstate 95 southbound caused significant delays for drivers in Richmond.
The crash was first reported at around 4 p.m. and was located a couple of miles south of the Maury Street exit, according to VDOT.
Virginia State Police said they believe a car with mechanical issues got a flat tire and caught fire when trying to pull over to the shoulder. During the attempt, the vehicle reportedly struck a jersey wall and came to a stop.
Another two-vehicle fender bender-style crash happened as a result of the front car attempting to avoid a crash with the flat-tire-vehicle, according to police. There were no reported injuries and the crash remains under investigation.
All southbound lanes were reported closed by VDOT at 4:14 p.m. An hour later, there was reportedly a traffic backup approximately five miles long.
The crash was marked as clear by VDOT shortly after 7 p.m.
