Landfall expected soon along Florida coast

Floodwaters raced down streets and into yards along Florida’s southwest coast Wednesday as heavy rains and high winds from powerful Hurricane Ian, blasting 155 mph winds, roared closer to landfall expected within hours.

“It is going to have major, major impacts in terms of wind, in terms of rain, in terms of flooding,” Gov. Ron DeSantis warned in a briefing Wednesday. “So this is going to be a nasty, nasty day, two days.”

More than 2.5 million Floridians were under mandatory evacuation orders, though for most of those who had not left it was too late to flee. More than 270,000 homes and businesses in South Florida already were dark, according to the tracking website poweroutage.us. Power outages should be expected statewide, Florida Power & Light warned.
