RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — While cold and flu season is about to end, it might not be time to put the tissues away just yet. Virginia’s spring allergy season will soon be upon us.
Virginia’s allergy season mostly takes place throughout the spring, with the main allergen of this time being trees. Some of the more common culprits for allergies in Virginia include oak, birch, elm and maple trees.
However, while spring doesn’t officially start until mid-March, allergy season can often begin earlier in late February.
Symptoms of seasonal allergies include runny noses, nasal congestion and sore throats.
Experts recommend using newer, over-the-counter antihistamines to treat the itching and sneezing that comes with allergies. People with nasal congestion can also use corticosteroid nasal sprays as long as they are used consistently every day.
