RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Those wondering if they should take advantage of recent warmer temperatures and enjoy a day on the James River should reconsider their plans.
A spokesperson for the Friends of the James River Park said the river is still too dangerous for recreation as of Friday, Jan. 26.
While the air may be pushing 80 degrees, the James River is still rather chilly at 45 degrees.
“People need to remember that it is still winter and that air temps change way faster than water temps,” the spokesperson said.
There is a risk of hypothermia when swimming for an extended period in 40 to 50-degree conditions without a dry suit, according to the spokesperson. This chance increases if the temperatures drop below 40.
Additionally, the James River’s water level is still too high. The river currently sits at just over five feet and that level is only expected to rise over the weekend.
“Higher water means stronger currents and a greater risk of being swept downstream,” the spokesperson said.
