Idalia makes landfall in Florida

CEDAR KEY, Florida − Hurricane Idalia made landfall along Florida’s Big Bend on Wednesday as a Category 3 storm with sustained winds at 125 mph with what was projected to drive “catastrophic” storm surge, the National Hurricane Center said.

Radar imagery indicate the eye of Idalia made landfall along the coast of Florida’s Big Bend near Keaton Beacharound 7:45 a.m., the center said in an update minutes later. The storm has eased slightly from a Category 4 storm with 130-mph winds an hour earlier.

“This change in wind speed does not diminish the threat of catastrophic storm surge and damaging winds,” the hurricane center said. Idalia was reported to be speeding north-northeast at 18 mph.
