Another year and another disappointing playoff ending for the Philadelphia 76ers.
After falling short in Game 7 against the Boston Celtics in yet another second round exit, the Sixers go into the offseason without much space, no draft picks and with the possibility of losing guard James Harden to free agency.
What can the Sixers do to help reigning-MVP Joel Embiid get to at least the conference finals for the first time? Options will probably be limited come draft night.
Here’s all the information you need to know heading into the 77th installment of the NBA draft:
When is the NBA draft 2023?
The NBA draft will be held Thursday and Friday, June 22-23, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
This is the ninth time in 10 years that the home of the Brooklyn Nets will host the two-round event. The lone exception was 2020 (COVID).
What time is the NBA draft?
The draft starts at 8 p.m. Thursday.
NBA draft TV info
Both rounds will be televised on ESPN and ABC (first round only) on Thursday and Friday night. It will also be available to stream via the ESPN app.
Will Victor Wembanyama be the No. 1 pick?
Victor Wembanyama, widely considered a once-in-a-generation talent, is a whopping -20000 favorite to be selected first overall by the San Antonio Spurs. For context, the next shortest odds to be the first pick is Scoot Henderson at 50-1 (+5000).
Why don’t the Sixers have any draft picks?
The Sixers don’t own a 2023 first-round pick due to the blockbuster trade with the Nets when they acquired Harden. Since Brooklyn didn’t take Philadelphia’s first-round selection in 2022, it was deferred to the 2023 NBA Draft. The Sixers also don’t own any second-round picks in the 2023 and 2024 NBA draft due to tampering violations with free agents P.J. Tucker and Danuel House Jr. last offseason.
During the 2022 NBA draft, the Sixers used the 23rd pick to select Colorado State forward David Roddy before trading his rights and veteran Danny Green to the Memphis Grizzlies for guard De’Anthony Melton.
Will Daryl Morey make a trade? Will Tobias Harris remain a Sixer?
With no picks and little cap space, Sixers President Daryl Morey will have to get creative to improve the roster come Thursday.
Speculation is that Sixers ownership will allow Morey to buy a second-round pick to help add some young depth to the roster.
According to multiple reports, forward Tobias Harris and his expiring contract could be dealt as teams look to shed salaries next season due to a new, restrictive collective bargaining agreement that starts in July.
Harris is scheduled to earn just over $39 million in the last season of his five-year, max contract he signed in 2019.
