Hobby Lobby, the national arts and crafts retailer, is planning to open a store in Christiana in January.
The new store is taking a portion of a Burlington on Route 273 in University Plaza. It will be the first Hobby Lobby in New Castle County and the second in Delaware, joining a Hobby Lobby on Route 13 in Dover that opened in 2020.
Burlington reopened in March in a smaller store to the right of their original University Plaza entrance when viewed from the parking lot. The entrance to Hobby Lobby will be to the left of the new Burlington.
With more than 900 stores, Hobby Lobby says it’s the largest privately owned arts and crafts retailer in the world. Their stores offer home decor products, tableware, art supplies, fabrics and jewelry-making supplies.
Adjacent to University Plaza, construction crews last summer cleared woods for a Wawa.
A Wawa spokesperson did not respond when asked when the store will open. Approved plans also call for two retail pads — one for a fast-food or quick-service restaurant and the other for a larger restaurant. The Wawa will have gas pumps, according to the plan.
New Castle County on Aug. 30 issued a building permit for Wawa. The permit expires after a year, but can be extended.
