Expanded DIAA football playoffs means there are more postseason honors in 2021 for Delaware high school football players and coaches.
All will be recognized when the Delaware Interscholastic Football Coaches Association teams up with Delawareonline.com to provide a virtual awards show.
It will provide video and photo highlights of Delaware’s best when it streams live Monday at 7:30 p.m. on Delawareonline’s Facebook page.
News Journal high school sports beat reporter Brad Myers will host and be joined by DIFCA president John Wilson, the head coach at St. Georges, and New Journal sports reporter Kevin Tresolini.
Delaware crowned Class 3A, 2A and 1A state champions in 2021 after previously having just two divisions.
The show will feature video clips of the first-team All-Class selections and players of the year, plus photo slide shows of the second-team All-Class choices.
The players of the year were Smyrna’s Cameron Edge (offense) and Middletown’s Tomiwa Durojaiye (defense) and Kody Harris-Miller (lineman) in 3A; Archmere’s Chris Albero (offense) and Woodbridge’s Wyatt Wright (defense) and Noah Matthews (lineman) in 2A; and Quasim Benson of St. Elizabeth (offense), Kyler Weaver from Laurel (defense) and T.J. Burke of Indian River (lineman) in 1A.
Also being celebrated are the DIAA Special Olympics Delaware Unified Flag Football champions from Dover; Coaches of the Year Chip Knapp of Dover in 3A, John Bellace from Archmere in 2A and St. Elizabeth’s Mike Lemon in 1A; the Maxwell Football Club Mini-Max Award winners from each team; Maxwell Football Club Delaware Player of the Year Wayne Knight of Smyrna; Officials of the Year; winners of the DIFCA Crown Trophy Sportsmanship Awards; and the DFRC Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game and retiring executive director Tony Glenn.
