CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A head-on collision between a sedan and a truck that was being pursued by police has left one person dead and another fighting for her life Thursday evening.
At around 6:59 p.m. on July 28, officers were called to the scene of a reported robbery on 3700 Meadowdale Boulevard in Chesterfield. According to Lt. John Payne Jr. of the Chesterfield Police Department, the circumstances surrounding the robbery is unknown, but the victim of the robbery was pistol-whipped with a firearm.
Police said the suspect then drove away from the scene in a stolen red Dodge Ram truck on Hopkins Road. Officers were deployed in the air and on the ground in pursuit of the suspect, who refused to stop his vehicle, according to Lt. Payne.
While driving on Hopkins Road, the suspect crossed the double yellow line in an attempt to get away from officers and struck a silver sedan traveling in the opposite direction.
The suspect then ran away from the scene of the crash, but was arrested shortly afterwards by police.
The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the crash scene, while the female passenger in the sedan was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
Kenneth Dressler, a man who was at the scene when the crash happened, told 8News that he saw a police car chasing a red truck that was speeding down the road. The truck then struck a sedan head-on.
The impact of the collision caused both the truck and sedan to be lifted into the air, Dressler said, adding that canines had been deployed as part of police’s investigation. Several ambulances were also present.
“It was devastating to watch,” Dressler said about the crash.
