Hanover County bans walking dogs with no leash until July

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Starting today, all dogs in Hanover County must be on a leash while outside of their owners’ property.

The mandate will be in effect across the county until the last day of June. This law applies to Hanover’s suburban areas all year but extends to rural areas during the spring and summer to protect young farm animals.

The ban is also intended to protect pets from rabies. According to a report by the Virginia Department of Health from 2016, the amount of animals tested for rabies in the commonwealth that year spiked in late spring and went back down in early fall.
