Gun safety rally gathered at Capitol to urge Youngkin to sign gun violence prevention bills

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Several gun violence prevention advocacy groups gathered at the Virginia State Capitol for a rally before the end of the legislative session.

At 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, gun violence prevention advocacy groups, including Virginia Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, gathered at the The Bell Tower at the Virginia State Capitol for a Rally for a Safer Virginia.

The groups rallied in front of the Capitol to urge Governor Glenn Youngkin to sign several gun control bills into law.

Gun safety advocate Shantell Rock said the movement is going to continue to advocate for the sake of their communities, schools and children.

“We have legislation in the House and the Senate that’s working very hard, and have worked very hard to pass common sense gun legislation,” Rock said. “So, we want to call the governor, e-mail the governor, to let him know do not veto our safety. Do not veto the safety bills.”

A spokesperson for Youngkin’s office said in a statement: “The Governor will review any legislation that comes to his desk, but as he reiterated during his State of the Commonwealth address, Virginia’s gun laws are already among the toughest in the nation.”
