Two people are dead and one injured following a grocery store shootout outside El Rey on Cesar Chavez Drive in Milwaukee. Police said just before 10 a.m. Saturday, a man went into the store, created a disturbance and two security guards chased him into the parking lot. That when police said the man shot at the guards, with one of the guards shooting back.One of the security guards and the man they chased were both shot, and did not survive. Police the guard was a 59-year-old man. Police said a 41-year-old woman bystander was also minorly injured in the crossfire. One witness who was inside the store said, “a man came inside yelling and a security guard got him out. He followed him to the parking lot. About five minutes went by and then I just heard gunshots.”The Villarreal family, which owns El Rey, sent out a statement:”We are devastated by the violent act which led to a senseless loss of life this morning. This horrible event not only happened in the community we love, but outside of our grocery store,” the statement said. “Our deepest appreciation goes out to the security team, who bravely put their lives on the line to prevent this tragedy from escalating and potentially becoming an even worse situation. And we thank each first responder as their actions helped to stabilize the scene and our neighborhood,” the statement said. “We are proactively working with law enforcement as they conduct a standard investigation. Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, we cannot provide further comment at this time. Just know that the entire El Rey family is heartbroken by this senseless act and thankful for the support of our community,” the statement said. El Rey remained closed Saturday evening. It reopened Sunday.
