A grocery shopper raced to save two little girls inside a scorching hot car in Oklahoma City.The mother was arrested in the Walmart parking lot. The good Samaritan spoke with KOCO 5. Charlene Cooksey said the girls were sweating and unconscious in the backseat. They were about to break a window when a woman crawled through the sunroof.”If it wasn’t for her, we’d still be trying to pull those car doors open. She’s the real hero cause she jumped in,” Cooksey said.Cooksey and her husband were at Walmart off Interstate 240 on Sunday when they saw a security guard peeping through a car window. That’s when she saw the 2-year-olds in the backseat.”I went into mom mode,” Cooksey said.Grabbing a crowbar, they wanted to break the window, but security was hesitant.”Security guards didn’t know what to do because in their minds, they wanted to wait for the fire department and I was like, ‘Screw the fire department. Those babies need to get out,’” Cooksey said.Thankfully, another woman crawled through the sunroof and opened the doors. She grabbed the girls and cooled them off in the security car.”People from Walmart were trying to give us water, but the girls weren’t having it. They were scared and they were calling out for momma,” Cooksey said.About 40 minutes later, the mom came out.”I wanted to see the girl who came out. I wanted to see who would risk their kids just to go into Walmart. I understand it’s hard being a mom and you don’t have anyone to watch your kid, but don’t leave them in the car,” Cooksey said.It was an extraordinary effort to save the girls. KOCO 5 reached out to Walmart about what protocols security guards are trained to follow in a situation like this. They didn’t answer our questions, only saying, “We’re grateful the children were rescued from the car and are doing well. We’d also like to extend our thanks to the customers and associates who worked quickly to get the children to safety.”As for the mom, she has not been charged at this time.
