After the first snowfall of 2022 swept through Delaware on Monday, forecasters are already looking ahead toward more severe winter weather this week.
Wednesday morning may see freezing rain, National Weather Service meteorologist Dean Iovino said. This may make the roads, sidewalks and bridges hazardous.
Monday’s snowfall:‘It’s pretty if you can stay inside.’ Delaware digs out from ‘incredible amount’ of snow
Iovino urged drivers and pedestrians to be cautious during the morning commute, but said the rain should be “fairly light.” An advisory is in effect from 5 to 9 a.m.
Another helping of snow – likely 2 to 4 inches – will likely come late Thursday night and continue through Friday morning for the northern part of the state. Southern Delaware is slated to see about 1 to 2 inches.
“That’s the next weather system to keep an eye on,” Iovino said.
Already, some school districts – largely those downstate – have announced closures and delays ahead of Wednesday’s freezing weather and the continued effort to dig out from Monday’s dumping.
School closures, delays
- Due to inclement weather, all Indian River schools will be closed Wednesday. All 12-month employees should check their district e-mail accounts for information on their work status for Wednesday.
- Another snow day for Seaford students Wednesday. Twelve-month employees report at 10:30 a.m. Ten-month employees have a remote planning day. The buildings will be open at 10:30 a.m. if any staff need to gather materials for planning purposes.
- Laurel Schools will be closed Wednesday.
- Sussex Technical High School will be closed Wednesday. Students should check Schoology for messages from their teachers.
- Due to the continued concerns about poor road conditions, the Cape Henlopen School Buildings will be closed Wednesday. It will be a remote, asynchronous day for staff and students. Assignments will be posted to SeeSaw or Schoology by 9 a.m. Wednesday.
- Woodbridge School District will be closed for students Wednesday, but offices will open at 10 a.m.
- Some school districts in northern Delaware, including Appoquinimink, have indicated they will assess the early morning road situation and adjust learning plans accordingly.
