A 42-year-old former teacher at Stanton Middle School has been charged with nearly two dozen counts of rape after Delaware State Police say she sexually abused a student nearly a decade ago.
Reed Messer, who had not been employed by Red Clay Consolidated School District since November 2014 and most recently lived in Greenville, South Carolina, was arrested late last month at her home. She was extradited to Delaware on Monday and police announced the arrest Tuesday.
Delaware State Police said detectives are releasing limited information “due to the sensitivity” of the case, but said the investigation began in late December after the Delaware Division of Family Services reported the incident to police.

The tip said that Messer had abused her student about nine years ago, beginning in October 2014. The “apparent sexual relationship” lasted about two months, police said. Messer would have been about 34 at the time.
Messer was arraigned Monday on two counts of sexual abuse of a child by a person of trust and 20 counts of third and fourth-degree rape.
She was taken to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $310,000 cash bond.
