Last year, for the first time, much of mainstream America learned that Juneteenth has been a regional holiday since the late 19th century — a celebration of the big moment in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved African Americans learned that they were free. A second Independence Day, to complete what July 4, 1776, left undone.
