GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A driver has been charged with DUI manslaughter after the car he was driving rear-ended another car on Interstate 64 West in Goochland County, killing a 58-year-old woman.
At 10:35 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, Virginia State Police troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash that resulted in a death on Interstate 64 West in Goochland County.
Police said a 2010 Dodge Challenger driven by 30-year-old Darien Boutchyard, of Newport, North Carolina, was speeding and rear-ended a 2019 Chevrolet Spark, driven by 22-year-old Steven Schell, of Newport News.
According to police, Steven Schell’s mother, 58-year-old Mary Elizabeth Schell, of Newport News, was sitting in the rear passenger seat of the Spark and was ejected from the car. She died due to her injuries at the scene.
Steven Schell had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.
Police said Boutchyard and his passenger, 25-year-old Kendra Lee Wright, of Warrenton, attempted to run away from the scene but were apprehended quickly by troopers.
Wright was charged with being drunk in public.
Boutchyard was charged with DUI manslaughter, DUI 3rd offense, obstruction of justice, open container, and felony hit and run.
This crash remains under investigation by Virginia State Police.
