A 61-year-old Dover man who police say was driving drunk when he crashed his car Wednesday evening has been charged with vehicular homicide for the death of his front seat passenger.
The wreck occurred just after 6:45 p.m. on Judith Road, south of Dinahs Corner Road, near Hartly when the driver of an SUV “failed to negotiate a moderate left curve” and drove off the edge of the road, Delaware State Police said.
The SUV flipped onto its passenger side and continued to roll before hitting a “large” utility pole, police said. The car ultimately stopped on its roof.

The front seat passenger, a 64-year-old Dover man, was not wearing a seatbelt and died on scene. Police will publicly identify him once family is notified.
The driver of the SUV was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Police said they believe he was under the influence of alcohol when the wreck occurred.
After being released from the hospital, the driver was arrested and charged with his fifth DUI, as well as several traffic charges in addition to the vehicular homicide charge. He is being held at Sussex Correctional Institution on $16,150 cash bond.
