An SUV hit a tree at high speed, overturned and caught fire in the early hours of Monday morning, leaving one man dead in the Dover area, according to Delaware State Police.
The driver, who has yet to be identified Monday afternoon, was traveling north on Bayside Drive just before 4 a.m., according to Delaware State Police, approaching a slight right curve south of Leipsic Road. The 2015 GMC Acadia traveled roughly 150 feet in an embankment running parallel to the roadway before striking a tree. Upon impact, police said, it spun counterclockwise, overturned onto the passenger side and caught fire. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
No passengers or other vehicles were involved in the crash, but Bayside Drive was closed for about four hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
