One woman was killed, another is in critical condition and a third suffered minor injuries in a three-car crash outside Widener Law School in Talleyville Thursday afternoon, police said.
Delaware State Police troopers were called to Route 202 at the law school just before 4 p.m. for reports of the wreck. There, they found a 29-year-old woman dead and the 44-year-old driver of the car she was in critically injured.
A 22-year-old woman was also hurt, police said.
Through their investigation, troopers determined that a 61-year-old man was driving a 2016 Toyota Tundra north on Route 202 when a 2021 Kia Forte, driven by the 44-year-old, tried to turn right onto Route 202 north. The woman turned “directly” into the path of the Toyota, police said.
The man veered left to avoid hitting the Kia, which “continued moving diagonally, traveling northwest across the lanes of Route 202,” according to police.
Once the Kia got to the left lane of the three-lane road, the front of the Toyota hit the back left corner of the Kia, causing the driver to lose control. She crossed over the small, concrete median and into the south lanes.

As she went into the south lanes, a 22-year-old woman was driving south on Route 202. The Kia moved directly into the path of her 2017 Chevrolet Cruze, causing the front of the car to T-bone the Kia’s passenger side.
Both cars stopped a little ways away after hitting a guardrail.
The passenger, whose side of the vehicle took the impact, died at the scene. She was wearing a seatbelt. The driver remains in critical condition.
The driver of the Chevrolet was taken to the hospital with “minor” injuries, police said. The man in the Toyota wasn’t hurt.
Police closed the southbound lanes of Route 202 for about four hours as they investigated.
