One person was killed and two people were injured when two trucks collided on Route 1 in Smyrna Wednesday morning, according to Delaware State Police.
The identity of the man who died has not yet been released.
Police said that a 24-year-old man from Ranson, West Virginia, was driving north on Route 1 in a 2021 International Box Truck in the right lane. After the truck passed exit 114 at 11:43 a.m., police said the driver fell asleep, causing the truck to drift off the road and hit a 2018 International Flatbed Truck parked on the right shoulder.

The driver of the flatbed truck, a 60-year-old man from Somerset, New Jersey, was outside of the truck when the passenger side of the box truck hit the back left of the flatbed truck, according to police, but was still hit. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Police said the box truck then swerved to the left, crossing both northbound lanes of Route 1 and hitting a guardrail before coming to a stop in the grass median. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to police, and his front-seat passenger, a 27-year-old man from Baltimore, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The northbound lanes of Route 1 were closed for over four hours, and police are still investigating.
