In the wake of the deadly tornado that tore through Sussex County near Greenwood and Bridgeville, Delawareans are beginning to get back on their feet.
Many residents in the storm zone were left with damaged, sometimes uninhabitable homes, broken or missing belongings and, in one case, the loss of a loved one.
Aid workers, state agencies and volunteers from across the region have come together to help those in need. And while some organizations are not accepting outside assistance, others are open to more volunteers. Here is a list of ways to help people impacted by the tornado.

Volunteer with the Red Cross
The local chapter of the Red Cross is accepting volunteers, including for its disaster response team. Volunteers are currently providing 10 local families impacted by Saturday’s storm with aid including food, water, medication and emotional support, according to the Red Cross.
They are also encouraging anyone able to donate blood to do so, as the storm has disrupted blood drives in some areas.

Volunteer with or donate to the Delaware Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD)
Contact Delaware’s branch of Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster to be connected with a community partner in need of assistance by filling out a form at devoad.org/contact-us. VOAD cautions against “self-deploying” to the disaster area; instead, people interested in volunteering should wait until they’re given an official assignment and can take necessary safety precautions.
