A 42-year-old Magnolia man who tried to intervene after being notified by children about a domestic assault early Tuesday morning died after the accused attacker strangled him, Delaware State Police said.
Troopers were called to the 400 block of Stevenson Drive in Magnolia just before 12:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a “physical altercation.”
There, troopers were told that 27-year-old Gadiel Haro had been arguing with his 26-year-old girlfriend. During the fight, Haro assaulted the girlfriend, which took place in front of two young children, police said.

As the fight progressed, the children ran from the house to their neighbor’s home, where they asked for help. The neighbor rushed over and tried to intervene, police said, but Haro choked the man to death.
The man, who has not yet been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Haro was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, strangulation, endangering the welfare of a child and offensive touching.
He’s being held at Sussex Correctional Institution on more than $1 million cash bond.
