One woman was killed and another seriously injured in an early morning crash on I-95 near Wilmington, Delaware State Police said.
The driver, whose name has not been released, was a 25-year-old woman from the Wilmington area, according to police. Her passenger, a 28-year-old woman, was taken to an area hospital where her serious injuries are being treated.
Neither woman was wearing their seatbelt, according to police.
What caused the crash on I-95?
The incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday as the younger woman drove a 2007 Chevrolet Impala south on I-95. As she approached the Route 141 overpass, police said she veered to the right, crossing over two traffic lanes before the car began spinning.
The Impala then struck the guardrail, causing it to become detached and penetrate the driver’s side of the vehicle.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The three right lanes of south I-95 were closed for about five hours while the crash was investigated and the roadway was cleared.
