Nicolas Pizarro proved himself on the final straightaway of the Hytche Athletic Center.
Twice.
The Tatnall senior surged in the final meters of both races to sweep the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs at the DIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, held Feb. 19 in Princess Anne, Maryland.
He also helped the Hornets win the 4×800 relay on his way to being named the state’s Boys Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
Pizarro won the 1,600 in 4:23.42, 2.5 seconds ahead of Matt Miller of Salesianum. He came back later to take the 3,200 in 9:43.51, 1.13 seconds in front of the Sals’ Ryan Banko.
GIRLS TEAM:Four-event champ leads Delaware’s All-State girls indoor track and field team
The All-State team is made up of the meet’s champions in each event, and Tatnall’s Micah Earnest, Andre Latina and Sebastian Pizarro joined Nicolas Pizarro on the list after combining to win the 4×800 relay.
Michael Portale of Salesianum was another three-time winner, in the 200 dash and 4×200 and 4×400 relays.
The team champion Sals had several other All-Staters, including Matthew Klous in the pole vault; Bishop Lane in both winning relays; Vinny DelliCompagni and Jasyn Truitt in the 4×200; and Matthew Filliben and Braeden Korb in the 4×400.
Sussex Tech’s Yougendy Mauricette surprised himself as a double winner in an unusual combination – the 55-meter hurdles and 400-meter dash.

“My main event is 400 hurdles, so this indoor season I decided to work on both the 400 and my sprinting hurdles,” Mauricette said. “… I was more surprised that I won the 55-meter hurdles, because I’m really more of a mid-distance runner than a sprinter.”
The other All-Staters were Smyrna’s Demitri Carter in the 55-meter dash, Polytech’s Matt Gatune in the 800, Brandywine’s Jackson Bliey in the high jump, Dover’s Munir Powell-Holloman in the long jump, A.I. du Pont’s Donte Dockery in the triple jump and St. Mark’s Max DiOssi in the shot put.
