A 20-year-old former football star who was hit by a train and his car last weekend in Newark has died, police said.
Luigi Oronzio, 20, died Wednesday, four days after the accident. One of the passengers in his car who was also hit by the train and car has since been released from the hospital.
The incident unfolded just before 2:15 a.m. on Saturday when Oronzio’s car got stuck on the train tracks at the intersection of New London Road and West Main Street in Newark.
According to Newark police, Oronzio was driving a 2020 Toyota Camry the wrong way on New London Road – between West Cleveland Avenue and West Main Street – when he turned onto the railroad tracks. That’s when his car got stuck.
All seven people in the Camry, which typically only has room for five people, were able to get out of the car, but Oronzio and one of his passengers couldn’t get far enough away from the back of the car before an oncoming train hit the car. Oronzio and his passenger were hit by both the car and the train.
The two were rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where Oronzio later died.
Delaware Online/News Journal archives show Oronzio played football and baseball for Delaware Military Academy. He graduated from the school in 2020.
