YORK COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Virginia State Police are currently investigating vehicle crash that left two people dead, which occurred on Interstate 64 West during the evening on Monday, Jan. 1.
In an updated release sent at 10:36 p.m. by Virginia State Police, a spokesperson said preliminary investigations revealed that at around 6:13 p.m., the driver of a 2016 Ford Econoline was driving in the far left lane, crossed over all lanes of traffic and ran off of the road.
The Ford then hit a tree and caught fire, killing both the driver and passenger of the vehicle.
Police said that due to the damage of the vehicle caused by the crash and fire, both the driver and passenger are unable to be identified.
The Office of the Medical Examiner will make positive identification, according to police.
The crash remains under investigation.
