Mission BBQ, the patriotic counter-service barbecue restaurant, is planning another new location in Delaware.
The company recently posted a “coming soon” sign on fencing surrounding the former Pier 1 Imports on Concord Pike in Talleyville. The space is at a corner of the Concord Gallery shopping center, which also includes Staples, Five Below and Bertucci’s.
Mission BBQ spokesperson Linda Dotterer said the company is planning to open the restaurant in late fall. New Castle County on June 30 issued a permit to Forrest Grove, a construction company that has built most of Mission BBQ’s recent East Coast expansions.
Mission BBQ’s calling card is its dedication to serving those “sworn to protect and serve our communities and our country,” their website reads. Armed forces and police memorabilia line the wooden walls of their restaurants.
The menu features a variety of meats, such as chicken, turkey, ribs and brisket, as well as a rotating dessert and several sides.
Pier 1 Imports filed for bankruptcy and closed 300 stores, including a Dover location, in February 2020. The company announced the shut down of its remaining stores in May 2020 citing the impact of pandemic-related restrictions. In addition to the Concord Pike store, Pier 1 Imports had locations on Route 1 in Rehoboth Beach and on Centre Boulevard near the Christiana Mall.

The only Mission BBQ currently in Delaware is on Route 13 in Dover.
Earlier this year, a Maryland company filed plans to build a Mission BBQ and a yet to be determined fast food restaurant on Kirkwood Highway in Milltown. A Mission BBQ spokesperson previously said the company had not signed a lease, but looked forward to being in the Wilmington community in the future. Dotterer did not comment when asked about the location this week.
PREVIOUS REPORTING:Mission BBQ could be heading to New Castle County. Here are the plans.
Under the plan, Mission BBQ and the fast food restaurant would be constructed side by side at the edge of the Kirkwood Plaza shopping center, which is home to Kohl’s, Acme and Cafe Napoli. To make way for the new restaurants, the existing bank on the property would be demolished.
The projects fit the current zoning, but will require relief from the Board of Adjustment. The plan has not moved past exploratory stages, according to county records.
Dotterer said Mission BBQ is hiring leadership positions for the Concord Pike restaurant. More information can be found at mission-bbq.com/join-our-team/.
