RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A University of Richmond student has unexpectedly passed, according to the university’s president Kevin F. Hallock in a letter to the community.
The message comes after Richmond Police Department officers were called to the 200 block of Richmond Way around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, for a report of “trouble unknown.”
Richmond officers were then canceled and advised that the University of Richmond Police would respond to the call as the incident was on the university’s campus, according to officials.
A spokesperson said the Richmond Fire Department was also called to the campus for the report of a man in distress in a lake. The Fire Department located the man who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives have determined this incident was an accidental drowning, according to authorities. At this time, no foul play is suspected.
In a message shared with the community, Hallock said that University of Richmond sophomore student Christopher Elvin had died unexpectedly on Thursday.
According to Hallock, Elvin was from Newark, New Jersey, and was active with the ultimate frisbee team and West Indian Lynk, a Caribbean student organization where he served as president.
Elvin recently declared his major in business administration with a minor in Chinese studies.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Christopher’s family, his many friends on campus, and all who knew him,” Hallock said in the message. “The University of Richmond flag will fly at half-staff in recognition of Christopher’s passing.”
The Chaplaincy will share Information about memorial arrangements when the details are available.
At around 1 p.m., a community was seen gathering at the University of Richmond in a vigil held for Elvin.
According to Hallock, Chaplaincy staff will be available in the Wilton Center throughout the day for those in the campus community who wish to come together and support one another at this time.
