The first day of school for college students is right around the corner, so whether you’re a student, parent or local resident, you may be mixed up in some of the move-in mayhem this week as students flock back to campus dorms and off-campus apartments.
As first-year students set foot in their new homes for the next nine months and upperclassmen make the familiar trek to campus again, areas surrounding Delaware’s college campuses should expect congestion.
In Newark, heavy traffic delays are anticipated around residence halls near Academy Street and the surrounding areas, including East Delaware, East Cleveland and South College avenues; New London Road; South Main Street; and North and South Chapel streets.
In Dover, residents will see increased road activity on Loop and College roads and the surrounding area.
Residents also can expect long lines at stores close to campus, primarily grocery stores and one-stop shops with home goods, as students and families pick up last-minute items and begin filling their pantries for the semester.
University of Delaware move-in schedule

The University of Delaware will welcome more than 4,000 first-year students to Newark during fall move-in this year.
Early move-in for Blue Hens begins on Wednesday, Aug. 23, between 5 and 7 p.m.
Traditional move-in will be spread over two days, Friday, Aug. 25, and Saturday, Aug. 26, for new students, with times staggered between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on those days to help ease traffic and congestion in the area and in the buildings. Each student received a specific check-in time.

Returning sophomores, juniors and seniors will move into their rooms on Sunday, Aug. 27, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Those who did not receive a specific check-in time must move in at some point during the given timeframe.
All students should have received an email with their room assignments, building directions and parking tags for the day. Each student and their family will have a 20-minute window of arrival and two hours available for moving in order to manage traffic around Newark and decrease congestion in residence halls.
The first day of classes for Blue Hens at the University of Delaware is Tuesday, Aug. 29.
