Clayton fire company member falls 25 feet, striking head at firehouse

A Clayton Fire Company member was taken to a hospital with head injuries after falling 25 feet while cleaning the firehouse Monday.

At about 6:40 p.m., the member was on a scissor lift while cleaning an upper portion of the fire engine room bay, according to fire company public information officer Kevin L. Wilson.

“The member was injured when the bay door was opened, hitting the scissor lift and knocking the lift over causing the member to fall approximately 25 feet, striking his head on the bumper of a piece of fire apparatus,” Wilson said in a news release.

Several fire company emergency medical technicians were at the station and began life-saving measures. The Kent County Paramedics and American Legion Ambulance of Smyrna were called to assist.

The state police helicopter flew the member to the Christiana Trauma Center for treatment of head injuries. No details about his condition were released or available Tuesday morning.

Wilson said the state’s Critical Incident Stress Management Team has been contacted and will be holding stress debriefings at the Clayton Firehouse for the members. Surrounding fire companies will be assisting the Clayton Fire Company with handling calls “so all the Clayton members have time to decompress,” he said.
