RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The City of Richmond unveiled the first utility box artwork installation this morning as part of a pilot beautification program.
On the morning of Thursday, Feb. 29, the City of Richmond unveiled the first utility box artwork installation located at the corner of North 9th Street and East Broad Street as part of a pilot program to use public space in the downtown central business district and Broad Street Corridor.
According to city spokesperson Petula Burks, the design of the utility box replicates a postcard that highlights points of interest in the area.
The utility box that received an artwork installation is just one out of 10 utility boxes along the Broad Street Corridor to be decorated as part of a pilot program to beautify the city.
According to Burks, the program will highlight historically significant people, structures and culture with creative depictions by transforming utility boxes into vibrant works of art.
In the initial phase of the program, artwork will be designed by graphic artists employed with the City of Richmond and will feature designs with themes that are relevant to the location of the utility box.
Additional installations have been designed and will soon cover more utility boxes along Broad Street.
