One Chinese water buffalo has been euthanized and two were captured after the trio was found loose in Charlotte, North Carolina, local media reported.
Officers received a call June 30 about three Chinese water buffaloes that escaped from their trailer, CMPD Animal Care and Control told local outlet Live 5 News in Charlotte.
An animal control officer was able to capture the buffaloes and put them in a livestock trailer, but one was spooked and subsequently escaped. Live 5 News reported that several animal control officers unsuccessfully worked “for hours” to recapture the buffalo.
Video of a single water buffalo in a busy intersection was captured on TikTok.
It was eventually contained the morning of July 1 at an elementary school field three miles from the neighborhood where the buffaloes escaped.

After causing damage to its owner’s truck and charging a person, CMPD Animal Care and Control euthanized the animal, according to local reports. The owner was given a uniform citation by police and charged with restraint of animals, attacking animals, a no permit charge and a nuisance charge, with fines totaling $225.
The possession of dangerous animals in North Carolina is regulated by cities and counites, and the state bans the import, transport, possession, sale and release of certain exotic species. According to Live 5 News, police gave the owner a choice to either harvest the remaining buffaloes for food, or move them to an area where they are not considered to be exotic.
