CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an increase in scam attempts.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the alleged scammers have been calling Chesterfield residents claiming that they either missed jury duty, missed a court date or have an active arrest warrant for contempt of court or failure to appear in court.
The alleged scammers, who claim to Chesterfield Sheriff’s deputies, then tell victims that they owe the county a fine.
The Chesterfield Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to never wire money to or purchase gift cards for a stranger and to call the jury coordinator at the Chesterfield County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office at 804-751-4411 to confirm whether they have missed jury duty.
Anyone who believes they have been the victim of a phone scam is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency. The Chesterfield County Police Department can be reached at 804-748-1269.
The Sheriff’s Office is also reminding residents that scammers can make it appear as though they are calling from other numbers, including those belonging to police or other local and state agencies.
