CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Chesterfield County School Board has voted to change the last day of school for students to Friday, May 31st.
While some parents say the move makes sense for kids – they note that the change could put a burden on families with younger children who will need childcare if schools are closed.
Sarah Wheeler owns The Goddard School for Early Childhood Development and notes that the move also means pivoting her business to accommodate the updated schedule.
“Initially, our summer camp program was going to be going on June 10th, that following week,” Wheeler said. “Now, with school ending Friday the 31st, we will now have to account for all the kids potentially being here that full week, before we were necessarily ready for them.“
Alicia Smith has three kids in Chesterfield County Public Schools. She said her friends will have to adjust to the change but said she’s available to offer a helping hand.
“I always try to help out when I can, and if I need to watch friends’ kids, I’m more than happy to do that because I know what it’s like to be in a jam,” Smith said.
The last day of school for students at Bellwood Elementary and Falling Creek Elementary, both of which are on a year-round calendar, will be Wednesday, May 29. More information about important dates of this school year can be found on the school district’s website.
