Celebrate World Down Syndrome Day with ‘Rock Your Socks 2024’

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Virginia Down Syndrome Association is inviting businesses, schools and organizations to “Rock Your Socks 2024” in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day on March 21.

Rock Your Socks is an awareness and fundraising campaign for people to wear fun socks in support the Virginia Down Syndrome Association’s mission to serve Virginia’s families and individuals with Down syndrome.

According to the association, March 21 is a symbolic date, as individuals with Down syndrome have three copies of their 21st chromosome. Socks represent the Down syndrome chromosome which looks like mismatched socks.

The association’s Director of Development and Events, Alison Markow said that the Rock Your Socks campaign will be an opportunity to advocate for the rights and inclusion of people with Down syndrome in the community.

“We want people to wear brightly colored, fun socks at work, school, and on social media to show their support for individuals with Down syndrome,” Markow said.

Socks are $5 a pair for youth and $6 a pair for adults. Bulk orders include 25 pairs of socks for youth and adult sizes.

Local pickup is available at designated times for orders at the Virginia Down Syndrome Association’s office at 1504 Santa Rosa Road, Suite 124 in Richmond. Shipping will be available for bulk orders of 25 pairs or more.

Companies can purchase socks to sell at their location to patients, customers and clients to help fundraise for the organization.
