A 59-year-old man died after his car collided with a tractor-trailer in the Bridgeville area on Friday night, according to Delaware State Police.
A Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling north at 10:37 p.m. Friday on Atlanta Road approaching Federalsburg Road, police said. At about the same time, the 59-year-old man was driving a Chrysler Town and Country minivan toward the intersection.
Police said the tractor-trailer proceeded north, ignored a posted stop sign and went directly into the path of the Chrysler.
The 59-year-old was able to avoid the tractor-trailer, according to police, and his Chrysler struck the right side of its flatbed. After impact, the Chrysler went underneath the trailer and rotated in a clockwise direction. The trailer dragged the Chrysler for a short distance before coming to a stop, said police.
The 59-year-old, who has not yet been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. A 67-year-old passenger in the minivan was also critically injured and taken to a local hospital, police said.
The operator of the tractor-trailer was not injured during the crash, according to police.
Delaware State Police is actively investigating this crash, which closed the road for about five hours. Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. J. Burns at 302-703-3269 or call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
