A 39-year-old man has been charged with assault hours after shooting a man in the head in Brandywine Park on Wednesday night, according to the Wilmington Police Department.
Court documents obtained by Delaware Online/The News Journal showed that police were flagged down by a pedestrian in the park at 5:24 p.m. who reported that a man was shot in the wooded area between Lovering Avenue and South Park Drive.
Police said they found a 40-year-old man on the 1200 block of S. Park Drive with a gunshot wound on the left side of his head. The man told police that he came to the park to meet someone he dated in the past, according to court records.
His former partner was joined by Jamaal Brown, whom the 40-year-old said he did not know. The former couple got into an argument, according to court documents, and Brown entered the argument. He then shot the 40-year-old in the head and left the park, court records show.
The 40-year-old told police that the person they previously dated drove a silver Hyundai, according to court documents, and police were able to find the car and take the owner in for questioning. The 40-year-old was then taken to the hospital in stable condition, Wilmington police said.
The former partner identified Brown as the shooter, court records show, and police said they arrested Brown in Wilmington’s Riverside neighborhood. He was found with a 9 mm handgun.
Brown was charged with first-degree assault and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony. He has been incarcerated at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $100,000 bail.
