A 24-year-old woman and a 3-year-old boy were injured in a fire near New Castle on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office.
They were both hospitalized for smoke inhalation, but are in good condition, according to officials.
Christiana Fire Department was called at 12:18 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15 to the 1100 block of Old Forge Road in the Meadows of Wilton development for reports of a fire with two people trapped inside. There, the department said responders found smoke coming from a townhome in the middle of row.

Before firefighters arrived, the woman was able to drop the child out the upstairs window to a bystander, according to the Christiana Fire Department. First responders were then able to help the woman out of the home via a ladder from the rear window on the upper floor.
Another person was also involved in the fire, but the fire department said the person refused treatment. The Fire Marshal’s Office did say only the woman and child were injured.
The fire was accidental and caused by cooking in the first-floor kitchen, according to the Fire Marshal’s Office, and did about $15,000 of damage.
