The next week or two will find famous music superstars playing beach music venues — and many of these shows are already sold out. However, additional concert events are already being added for this fall.
In Selbyville, the outdoor Freeman Arts Pavilion has been welcoming thousands of smiling faces this summer to watch national entertainers strut their stuff. However, rain has occasionally reared its head and led to some last-minute cancelations. Thus was the case last Tuesday, July 25, when a sold-out rock bill featuring Counting Crows and Dashboard Confessional had to be scuttled. (Refunds were to be processed automatically.)
Hopefully the weather will cooperate Friday, Aug. 4, as Freeman has what is perhaps its biggest show of the summer scheduled — a sold-out acoustic performance by singer-songwriter and Grammy winner Brandi Carlile. Freeman is a much smaller-than-usual venue for Carlile; her current tour in support of the “In These Silent Days” album has included an appearance at Madison Square Garden which was also sold out.
Freeman will present Dean Ford & The Beautiful Ones: A Tribute 2 Prince at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5 ($25). Comedian Tom Papa, who was rained out July 16, is now scheduled to yuk it up at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6 ($49, $54).
Pop superstar Jason Mraz will wow a sold-out crowd Tuesday, Aug. 8. Iconic vocalist Dionne Warwick will play a general admission, bring-your-own-chair show at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, and tickets are a mere $15.
In Dewey Beach, the Bottle & Cork nightclub will host a very special concert Thursday, Aug. 3 — a sold-out performance by hard-rock favorite KIX, which announced it will disband next month. While such legacy acts are notorious for following farewells with reunions, this is different. Vocalist Steve Whiteman and drummer Jimmy Chalfant have said that in their individual cases, they are both saying adios to the stage for health reasons and in order to enjoy retirement with their respective families.
KIX will go out with a final bang Sunday, Sept. 17 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, where more than 10,000 tickets were sold the first day they went on sale.
Last month the Cork hosted classic-rock tribute Magical Mystery Doors, and the group will return by popular demand at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4 ($20). It covers songs by The Beatles, The Doors and Led Zeppelin. Looking ahead to next week, country star Drake Milligan will take the stage at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10 ($25).
In Lewes, the Rocking the Docks concert series has three shows left. The shows are held outside at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. (with $30 admission). The Dirty Grass Players and Sam Burchfield will play Aug. 9, followed by Daniel Ponder with Phillip-Michael Scalez on Aug. 16, and Dumpstaphunk and Cris Jacobs on Aug. 23.
In Ocean City, a new one-day event has been announced for Saturday, Oct. 7. The inaugural Ocean 98.1 Sand Jam Music Festival will usher out the summer season on the Seacrets beach stage and the price is right — admission is free. Doors open at noon, and all ages will be admitted to enjoy sets by Passafire, Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, The Supervillains, Dale & the ZDubs, Crooked Coast and The Harbor Boys.
A festival that is already an annual Ocean City tradition has added a pair of classic-rock titans to its 2023 roster. This year’s edition of OC Bikefest takes place Wednesday through Saturday, Sept. 13-16.
On Thursday, Sept. 14, Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee Joan Jett & the Blackhearts will play at 5:30 p.m., and will be followed by British punk legend Billy Idol at 8 p.m. Jett and Idol were originally supposed to play there back in 2020, but were canceled due to the pandemic. Other acts performing this year include The Struts, Shinedown, ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Single-day general admission tickets begin at $95.
