Actress and Wilmington native Aubrey Plaza will test the off-Broadway waters this fall with her debut in “Danny and the Deep Blue Sea,” alongside Christopher Abbott.
The show is directed by Jeff Ward and written by John Patrick Shanley (“Doubt,” “Moonstruck”).
What is ‘Danny and the Deep Blue Sea’?
Plaza plays Roberta, a single mom with a teenage son, while Abbott is Danny, a loner who lives with his mama.
Both strangers are chased by the ghosts of their past while comparing scars over drinks in a Bronx bar.
“The unlikely pair uncover their deepest, darkest truths, carving out space for empathy — and maybe more,” per the show’s synopsis.
Plaza speaks out during SAG-AFTRA strike
Amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, Plaza has been active on the picket line, demanding better wages for her peers.
The actress, who is nominated for an Emmy Award for her performance on HBO’s dark comedy “White Lotus,” gave the entertainment industry a piece of her mind in a video the SAG-AFTRA shared to its official Instagram account last week.

“I am a proud SAG member and I’m out here to fight against this broken system. I think these corporations have been profiting off our talents and our work and we’re not getting fair wages and we deserve them,” Plaza said.
‘White Lotus’ star praises Wilmington Drama League
While “Danny and the Deep Blue Sea” will mark Plaza’s off-Broadway debut and first professional theater gig, this isn’t her first time on the stage.
Wilmington Drama League gave Plaza her first shot on stage at age 12.
In a 2017 interview with Delaware Online/The News Journal, Plaza praised WDL and production manager Kathy Butterbaugh.

“I really attribute our success to the way that we were encouraged by Wilmington Drama League and the people who work there like Kathy, who let us take the reins at a young age and instilled confidence in us,” she said. “That doesn’t happen for a lot of young people.”
When will Aubrey Plaza make Marvel debut?
Last year it was announced that Plaza is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will appear in the TV series “Agatha: Coven of Chaos.”
Marvel’s website says the show is slated to debut on Disney+ this winter. But there are rumors the SAG strike might delay it to next year.
